Ensuring safety at the bus stop is a shared responsibility for students, parents, and the entire community. By following a few simple guidelines, we can create a safer environment for everyone.
For Students:
• Arrive early – Be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus arrives.
• Stand back – Wait in a safe area, away from the curb or street.
• Stay visible – Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions.
• No running or horseplay – Keep distractions to a minimum while waiting for the bus.
• Cross safely – Always cross in front of the bus, never behind, and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing.
For Parents:
• Supervise younger children – If possible, accompany younger students to and from the bus stop.
• Set a good example – Show your child how to stay alert and cautious while walking to the bus stop.
• Create safe routes – If your child walks or bikes to the stop, choose a safe route that avoids busy streets and intersections.
For the Community:
• Watch for buses – Slow down when approaching a bus stop area and be prepared to stop when you see flashing lights.
• Obey traffic laws – Always stop for a school bus when its stop sign is extended or red lights are flashing. This applies to all lanes of traffic unless there is a divided highway.
• Report unsafe behavior – If you witness unsafe driving or hazards near bus stops, report them to local authorities to help keep students safe.
Together, we can ensure that our bus stops remain safe places for our students. Let’s all do our part to protect their journey to and from school! “Safe Bus Stops: It Takes a Community.”
